Dr.V.S.Krishna Library

The Andhra University Library was started in the year 1927, renamed as V.S.Krishna Memorial Library in 1968 as a mark of respect to the former Vice-Chancellor Dr. V.S.Krishna. The Library has two branch Libraries, one in Engineering College and other in Law College. The Library is housed in an imposing structure overlooking the sea. It has three floors and one cellar floor. The ground and first floors have mezzanine floors too. The plan view of the building is in T shape, having East, West and Northern wings. The total plinth area of the building is about 60,000 sqft. The main functionaries of the Library are the Circulation, Periodicals, Reference, Acquisition, Binding and Technical sections apart from the Administrative and Computers sections.

    • The Acquisition section deals with the procurement and allots Accession no. The Technical section further processes, like preparation of catalogue cards etc. These two are located in Ground mezzanine Floor. The reprographic facility is provided in the same floor for the convenience of the users.
    • The circulation section deals with Text books and Reading room sections and issue/ return of books. This is located in G.F, Ground Mezzanine floor and adjoining Reading room area. Separate Reading room facility is also provided in a spacious  two storied building adjacent to the main Library.
    • Purpose of the Reference section is mainly to provide facility to users to refer the books in that section. The Science, Engineering and Technology reference books are located in the First Floor and the Arts reference books are located in the second floor. There is also a Thesis section located in the First mezzanine floor. Office of the Librarian, Special reference section and the computer section are located in the First floor.   
    • The periodicals Section is located in the First mezzanine  floor, Where current periodicals are displayed             
    • The binding section is in the second floor.
    • The Library has huge collection of books apart from important journals , microfilms, paper and palm leaf manuscript. The      Library has been serving the academic and research  community over years and presently it is serving more than 17,000 users. The Library User community consists of teachers, research scholars, students and non teaching staffs. In addition to this, it also serves a group of deposit borrowers from outside. Most of them are form local industries and organizations and retired teachers of the University. The resources of Dr.V.S.Krishna Library are also frequently referred as the academic and research purposes by faculty and research students of other Universities.
    • The Library is also offering a number of information services to its users with professionally qualified staff using the printed and electronic resources and equipment. It is offering 14 hours (8.00 A.M. to 10.00 P.M.) Internet browsing facility for all its users. Access to e-journals is also made available to the campus academic community through UGC infonet programme.
    • The University library works as a hub of knowledge base for the students, research scholars, teachers and R&D wings of local industries such as Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Indian Navy and its several establishments, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Simhadri Power  Project, Bharat Heavy plates & Vessels, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Coramandel Fertilisers, Hindustan Zink Ltd. etc.,


  • To help the students and teachers to reach their full potential by providing multifaced, supportive learning and teaching environment.
  • To enhance Andhra University status as a major research university and center for higher education.
  • To position the University as the leading provider of outreach services in collaboration with other institutes of higher learning and research to users on and off the campus.
  • To provide global access to information published worldwide in many disciplines in support of qualitative research and education at the University level.

Library Rules

Conduct of Library users :

  • The Library is to be used for the purpose of academic study and research and for the consultation of subject and other related material. Everyone on the library shall respect the rights of other users.
  • Anyone using the library shall identify themselves on request to any member of the library staff. Silence must be strictly observed both by the users and the library staff in user reading and reference zones of the library.
  • The use of cell phones with in the library is forbidden. Users are not permitted to smoke, consume food or drink in the library.
  • No one shall reserve a working place in the library by leaving library material or personal property on a reading table.
  • The library is not responsible for any loss of any personal property brought into the library.

Care of Library Material

  • No one shall deliberately or carefully mutilate, deface or misplace any library material or piece of library equipment.
  • Anyone responsible for deliberate or careless mutilation or defacement or misplacing of library material furniture, equipment may be required to pay the full cost of replacement of any article defaced mutilated or lost in addition to any fine or other disciplinary measure imposed.

Entry in to the Library

  • Entry into the Library is restricted to the registered users on production of proper Identity card only. However, visitors may obtain permission to visit the Library from the In-charge.
  • Registered users shall notify the library promptly of any change of name or address.
  • Users must get registered with the Library for using use of library services
  • Personal printed reading materials (including Xerox copy) are not allowed inside the library
  • Personal belongings are to be kept at property counter against token.

Library Cards

  • Registered library users must hold current library cards, which must be produced on request.

Library working hours

Dr. V.S. Krishna Library offers 14 hours (8.00 A.M. to 10.00 P.M.) service to students, academic and research community 10.00 A.M. to 05.00 P.M. on Sundays. The library will be closed only on Public holidays as per the university academic calendar.

Borrowing privileges

Andhra University Library maintains huge collection of books on various subjects in addition to current and back volumes of research journals. As per the rules of the Library part of the collection is allowed for issue on loan to borrowers. Remaining collections are meant only for reference with in the library premises.

Issue Information

Items for Issue :

The registered borrowers are allowed to borrow all the books shelved in different loan sections such as Arts, Science & Technology and languages, on loan.

Items for only Reference :

All those items shelved in Textbook section, Quick reference and Reference sections, and Special collections are meant for reference in Library only. Similarly, both loose issues of current periodicals and back volumes of periodicals are also not meant for loan. Any user wishing to have a copy of an article in a periodical or a reference book can make use of the Xerox facility available with in the library.

Borrowing Facilities

The composition of user community of Dr. V.S.Krishna Library consists of students, teachers, research scholars, non-teaching staff and Deposit borrowers. By virtue of appointment in the University as a Teacher or Non teaching staff or a student or a scholar neither does nor automatically entitles to use the Library facilities. To borrow the library material, one must register himself / herself with the library by following necessary formalities. Borrowing privileges will vary depending on the status of the users.   • An amount of Rs.250/ - per year will be collected towards Annual Subscription from the retired Faculty.
  • Rs.10,000/- as refundable Deposit and Rs.500/- per year will be collected as Annual subscription from the Deposit Borrowers.
  • An amount of Rs.1,00,000/- as refundable deposit and an amount Rs.2,000/- per year as Annual subscription will be collected from the Member Institutions/ Organization.

Arrangement & Display

In Dr. V.S. Krishna Library, books are shelved according to classified using Decimal classification scheme to arrange them in a helpful sequence to facilitate easy browsing & location of books sought by the Users. Since the library follows open access system in most of the sections, to assist the user in locating the needed book all kinds of bay & shelf guides, direction and sign boards are provided in different sections of the library. Current issues of periodicals are displayed on slanted display racks in the periodical section. Each periodical is assigned with a location of the loose issue of the periodical. Once the volume of the periodical is complete, all the loose issues, which constitute the volume, will be sent for binding from the periodical section. The bound volumes, which are also called as back issues, of the periodical are then classified and catalogued and are kept in the reference section. There are separate reference sections in the library containing back volumes of periodicals for Arts, Science & Technology and Engineering. News Papers are kept in Separate section in the ground floor along with Text book section with adequate reading facility.

Library Staff

The library is managed by Librarian, one deputy librarian, three Assistant Librarians, 38 Library and Technical Assists. And more than 100 Non professional staff including the administrative staff. They Include office superintendent, Senior Assistant, Junior Assistant, typists, record Assistants and Attenders.

Reading & Seating facility

Dr. V.S. Krishna Library provides sufficient reading and seating facility along with stack area in different sections. In addition to this an exclusive reading room facility was created in a separate two storied building. Users are allowed to bring their personal books into this reading room while they were not allowed in the main library. At a time the library can provide seating and reading facility for about 400 users.

Furniture & Equipment :

  • The Library is equipped with mostly wooden chairs and table for seating and reading purposes, for shelving purpose mostly steel bookshelves with specified standards are used.
  • Binding section contains all necessary equipment for binding books, journals and for preparing library tickets and borrower books.
  • For the purpose of automation, Networking and Internet browsing, the library is maintaining computer systems and servers.

Other Physical facilities :

  • The library building is located in a specious area. Adequate parking facility is available for parking all types of vehicles.
  • Round the clock protected drinking water facility is provided with in the library for the sake of users and library staff.
  • Proper care is taken to provide good ventilation and lighting with in the library to create congenial environment for browsing and reading the library materials in different sections of the library.

Rules & Regulations

  • Library material shall not be issued to anyone who does not hold a current library card. Material may be issued only to the borrower in person or to a person having the written authority of the borrower. Library users shall be held responsible for any material issued on their card.
  • A librarian has discretion to limit the period for which any material may be borrowed by a person at any one time, and to grant special borrowing privileges to meet particular circumstances.
  • Material marked 'Not for Loan' and 'For reference only', current and back volumes of periodicals shall not be issued on loan.
  • All borrowed material shall be returned to circulation Desk in the Library.
  • Any borrower failing to renew or return borrowed material by the due date and time shall be liable to pay a fine calculated on the following scale.

Book : Per day
Fines are calculated from the due date.
Fines shall be payable at the circulation desk on all days between 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM and Sundays 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Borrowed material will be stamped with the due date of return, which need to be checked by the user. The Librarian does not have any obligation to notify borrowers as to when the books are overdue. Fines shall be charged when the books are returned after the due date. All items on loan shall be returned on expiry of membership of the library.
